No New Pickup!

This season I will highlight a notable player, based on the games played each night, who’s owned in less than 40% of Yahoo! Fantasy Basketball leagues.

Despite five games tonight and lots of action, there are no notable players tonight that should be picked up but haven’t already been a previous Pickup of the Day. As the NBA season progresses, some fantasy players will rise, fall, and then re-emerge. At that point, I’d be okay with repeating Pickups. Right now at only four weeks into the season, though, that hasn’t happened yet.

(My prediction for the first Pickup to fall and then re-emerge? Markieff Morris.)

So go out and get Terrence Jones (30%) and Martell Webster (31%). Or Jordan Hill (57%) and Steve Blake (52%) if you’re in an especially shallow league. And, if someone in your league has made the horrible mistake of dropping Tobias Harris (59%), make sure to grab him as he’s practiced two days in a row and could be close to returning.

Other Notable Players: Deron Williams practiced today and expects to play tomorrow, ending Shaun Livingston’s run just in time for me to pick up Terrence Jones, who isn’t likely to stay in free agent pools long after posting a 24-9 tonight and averaging 14-10 and 2 blk in his last four. Patrick Beverley has been pretty solid as well, though he’d be a more attractive PG if he actually could get his assists over three per game…This is why Martell Webster stays in the top five. Five threes and nine rebounds? Those are elite numbers from a G/F. Everything Trevor Ariza did when he was healthy, Martell Webster does better. Except get steals…With Raymond Felton and Metta World Peace both out, the Knicks shook up their line-up. J.R. Smith went back to the bench (and was great). Beno Udrih started (and was terrible), as did Kenyon Martin (and was what you’d expect from 35-yr old Kenyon Martin). Iman Shumpert, the guy I thought would benefit most, stayed relatively consistent and didn’t look as good as Pablo Prigioni. Basically, this is a bunch of non-news. I don’t know what’s happening with the Knicks, and I’m not sure they do either…Who the hell is Mike Scott? I was sure this must’ve been his first career double-double, but he actually had two in the last two garbage games of last season. Shot better this year though, and he was playing heavily early in the game and not just in garbage time. Would love to see the Hawks give him a start over DeMarre Carroll…What’s up with the Morris twins? Did their mom tell them they have to take turns scoring? After a week of averaging 23-8-2, Markieff has fallen off to 5-3-2 in his past three games. Meanwhile, Marcus Morris is averaging 16-6 with two 3’s in his last two games. I’m not sure what to make of this, so I’m not ready to recommend dropping Keef and picking up Mook. I actually wouldn’t be surprised to find out only one twin is any good, and they’ve been switching jerseys on us…Few more notes on the Suns: Gerald Green started in place of the injured Eric Bledsoe and put up a season-high 23 pts to go with 3 reb, 4 ast, 1 stl, 2 blk and 4 3’s, but he made back-to-back bonehead decisions at the end of the game that got him benched. His value will dip again when Bledsoe returns. Channing Frye has now had two good games in a row, though his role hasn’t changed at all. He’s been the starting PF all season, so he might just have found his shooting touch. He’s worth an add to the Watch List. Archie Goodwin had a promising first half, but then did virtually nothing in the second and finished with only 19 min. He’s got talent, but unless there’s a trade or injury, he won’t get the opportunity.

Top 5 Sneaky Pickups (owned in under 40% of Yahoo! Leagues):

1. Terrence Jones (30%)
2. Martell Webster (31%)
3. Josh McRoberts (18%)
4. Mo Williams (25%)
5. Jodie Meeks (27%)

Terrence Jones and Martell Webster rise due to their great games tonight, and Jodie Meeks slips due to the news that Kobe is returning sooner than expected.

Hindsight: No new pickups, and no new regrets either. I still believe in Jared Sullinger, though, if anybody’s wondering. I just like saying that to reassure myself.
